Fast Paced Days Lead to Restless Nights If You Can't Wind Down Properly
For many, their modern environment and routines are not conducive to unwinding. Often the body doesn’t get to experience the natural signals to start relaxing for sleep or to process the events of the day.

Blue spaces (areas near water) and watching sunsets are shown to reduce stress and promote self-reflection. Watching a sunset in particular has been shown to improve sleep by helping regulate the circadian rhythm, the natural rhythms that control sleep.

Creating Reflection
I took inspiration from other lighting designs that use glass refraction and hammered metal to create a water-like effect, experimenting with them to achieve the desired look.

Materials
Through experimentation with a range of materials, I found that thick glass created the best water light patterns due to its refractive nature which created a wide range of tones.
I also realised that any light shone through a diffuser, such as the round shade on top, would not refract properly to create these patterns, so direct lighting such as a naked LED would be required.

Refraction
I iterated the shape and complexity of the glass form until I found the effect and correct form factor. I opted for a ripple effect rather than just random bumps to create visual interest even when the light was off.

Push down on the shade once to turn on the warm sun-like orb.

Push a second time to turn on the
LED water effect.

Push a third time and the LEDs will gently pulse in the rhythm of lapping waves, reflecting onto the walls to create a soothing effect.

The user can engage further by gently spinning the disc, causing the mesmerising patterns to dance across the room.

The range of lighting effects offers the user the opportunity to reflect on their day.

When they are fully relaxed and ready to go to sleep, they can press the shade once more to turn it off.
